As one could expect, the extended ripening season, accompanied by a vast diurnal shift each day, is the reason these amazing stone-fil led vineyards produce such sumptuous, acidity-

driven fruit.

Macabeo is truly a Spanish or iginal . Not on l y i s i t almost unheard of anywhere else, it is very rare even in Spain. Oddly enough, it is very similar to—and, indeed, sometimes confused with— Viura, which is the most widely-planted white grape in Spain. Yup, we were a little confused as well.

When it comes to enjoying this wine, however, there is no confusion. The delicate, piquant flavors of exotic fruits and gripping acidity make it a natural with smoked salmon or shrimp quiche.

o Brujo Macabeo is one of the few single var i eta l Macabeo wines in the world. It is crisp and playful, with emerging flavors of tropical fruit and citrus making it fresh and well-balanced. Made from 100% Macabeo grapes grown on 30-year-old bush vines high in the mountains, this wine is made in the typical Spanish style of white wines with no barrel aging.

Bodegas Virgen de la Sierra is a small winery in the town of Villa de la Roya that has been making wines f o r o v e r a century, boast-

ing the oldest Bodega in the region. True to the traditional vineyards of the region, they farm small-plots of old bush vine plantations scattered amongst the hilltops of the region known as Sierra de la Virgen.
